Riley was born 3/9/79 and lived in Shoreline, Washington, until 1994. He was an athlete and could always be found playing sports. While he lived in Shoreline he enjoyed playing basketball, soccer, and roller blading; he was always having fun. He moved to Mount Vernon in 1994. He started at Mount Vernon High School as a sophomore. He was asked by Jess del Bosque (Riley's Cross Country coach) if he wanted to try out for the Cross Country team. Riley had never tried running before but found it to be to his liking. He helped the Cross Country team go to State in 1994 (MVHS took 4th place - Riley was 60th). In 1995 Riley again ran his heart out and won the Skagit County Meet.

He went to State in Pasco again, this time finishing 65th. His senior year he was again Skagit County Champion and went to State taking 49th. Riley also loved soccer and playing for Darren Bell, MVHS soccer coach. He was on the Wesco First Team in 1996. He was Fall Athlete of the Year in 1995 and 1996. When Riley wasn't running or on the soccer field, he was having fun. In his senior year (1997) the cafeteria had three lunch shifts going through it. Sometimes there wasn't time for each student to get lunch, so Riley brought a BBQ to school and was going to make hamburgers for everyone. Needless to say the school authorities didn't like this idea. Riley and his best friend, Chris Atwood loved dressing up in off-the-wall clothing, especially during Homecoming Week. We have pictures of them disco dancing on the tables of the cafeteria! Riley graduated in 1997. On July 20th he was at his girlfriend T. Traci Holt's house, having a family dinner. Traci's sister, Bonnie was driving Riley home with Traci in the car. Something happened that day we will never know what. The car hit another car head-on coming up the hill. Bonnie and Traci were killed instantly and Riley passed away on September 16th from injuries sustained in the accident.

Riley's motto was and always will be:

LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH & BE HAPPY.

The class of 1997 dedicated a plaque to Riley's memory. The song we all sing in his memory is "American Pie".
